International Food Exchange 2008

Thanks to the great efforts of Jon as well as other Francophile committee members, the unique International Food Exchange was brought to public on the 25th of October, 2008 big grin

During the food fiesta, plenty of  French, German, Korean, Chinese, ... food was shown up. Especially, a special German dish was cooked right at the event by a Singaporean Francophile.

The range of nationalities of students attending was even much larger, from the UK, US, German to Singaporean, Korean, Chinese and Vietnamese etc.

And pictures can tell a lot more cool

Le nouveau comité

Posted by Francophile at 03:25 AM on January 02, 2009 Comments comments (1)

As scheduled, the election was conducted on the 3rd of October, 2008 at the Deck.

Firstly, all the candidates had chance to express themselves to the old committee, friends attending the election as well as other candidates. It was really excitting when particular candidates received and answered questions from voters such as "Why did you choose to run for this position but not some other?", "Please discribe one event that you organized sucessfully the most." and so on. Interestingly, the candidates responded quite well and showed themselves. After that, votes were counted by the old committee members and the results were as follows:

    President: Wenly Lim

    Vice-president: Laura Diamond

    Secretary: Charmaine Low

    Treasurer: Jessica Wong

    Presidential Assistant: Noel Bay

    IT Advisor: Eric Nguyen

    The French Connection: Elaine Cheah

    Publicity Director: Olivia Heng

    Program Coordinator: Calvin Yeoh

    Program Coordinator: Oliver Guo

Since January 2009, Olivia Heng, Calvin Yeoh and Oliver Guo have become new members of the the committee. Bienvenue big grin

La Table Française, Welcome 2008/2009

Posted by Francophile at 02:12 PM on August 23, 2008 Comments comments (0)
So we had a pretty good time at the French table! Here are some snippets of the bunch of us who were there!

Well, the evening didn't quite go as expected! With almost 2 times more people we planned to have, you could imagine how drone some parts of the evening had become as we tried to work around our original plans! Luckily we had a pretty spontaneous crowd with us and thanks to them most of us had a really good time! Special thanks to S-U-S-A-N from the butt-om of our hearts.

At the end of it all, we had a national anthem contest. This being the French club, the three French men took the honors with a majority vote! (ok, no vote la but you see the relevance of them winning should there be a contest.)

And here is a reminder for you to remember to turn up for part two of NUS Francophile Welcome sessions at the movie screening "L'auberge Espagnole"

As part of a job that he is promised, Xavier, an economics student in his twenties, signs on to a European exchange program in order to gain working knowledge of the Spanish language. Promising that they'll remain close, he says farewell to his loving girlfriend, then heads to Barcelona. Following his arrival, Xavier is soon thrust into a cultural melting pot when he moves into an apartment full of international students. An Italian, an English girl, a boy from Denmark, a young girl from Belgium, a German and a girl from Tarragona all join him in a series of adventures that serve as an initiation to life.

We've done a screening of this before last semester and it was a great hit. judging from the response we had, we've decided that this would the best alternative (our first choice really, before tais-toi) to a light-hearted welcome to French Club in NUS!

Come join the crazy bunch at the Spanish Apartment in the very hot city of Barcelona! Remember the more the merrier! This is one good comedy not to be missed, and one great French event on the campus that you'd definitely want in on!

Please invite yourselves, and your friends to this FREE movie screening at Central Library Theatrette 1! Don't forget to RSVP for the FREE reception after the movie!

Upcoming events: tu as faim?

Posted by Francophile at 02:56 AM on April 15, 2008 Comments comments (0)
Hola mes petites amis.

We are organizing 2 foodie events during the holidays and in the new semester. So here are a couple of things on my agenda in today's email.

1) AFTER EXAMS

We are having a cooking class and this event is called Après l'Examen: Le Dessert

This activity features the recipes (in both French and English) of two French desserts (In Singaporean style!) and a demonstration with audience participation.

Time and Date: 15th May 2008, Thursday 3pm.

Venue to be confirmed (rather, communally decided upon, we are very democratic.)(If you think your house is very big, you can offer that too.)

Choice of dessert (we shall vote on this, and you can email me your suggestions!)

Think crêpes, truffles, tarte au fruits...

Fee: SGD $8 (inclusive of French, food, fun and recipes)

Depending on the turn out, we may also throw in a complementary treat of chocolate fondue ;)

Dateline to register by: 10th May 2008

Our second activity is

2) European Food Fiesta!

This will be an event held on a larger scale than most of our other activities. We are intending to put together a food event comprising of delicacies from the continent (and the gathered little islands next to it).

I will need your help in 2 ways:

i) We would like to gather your responses so that we know what to prepare for for such an event:

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=vvPdTzsA2SgFYcBpeUPYUw_3d_3d

we would like to hit the 300 people mark, so please send it to all your friends from NUS. Everyone counts (not just with their fingers! i heard engineers can do mental calculation.)

ii) As this will be a rather large event, I would like to ask if anyone will be interested in playing a part in this event. Of course there are perks from it. We can't promise CCA points but for sure, helpers will be credited with something. Keep in mind that this can help very much when we run for elections in the next committee. ;) Not to mention chocolates, food tasting and stuff. I need as much help as I can get because we are talking about big things here.

posters, calling up sponsors, IRO, restaurants, putting together the food guide, the mini food event before and so on. I promise you it will be totally enriching. really really really.

So that's it for now. I hope to hear some pretty positive response from you guys!

Comme une image/Look at me

Salut!

We are having another movie screening soon and we would like to invite YOU to come partake in fun!

WHO? are the lovely people involved in this event? Bien sûr we are les amies de Francophile
WHAT? Une projection du Film "Comme une image"/"Look at me"

---------------------
It really ain't over till the fat lady sings in Look At Me (Comme Une Image), a wonderfully witty and observant comedy-drama from writer-director Agnès Jaoui (previously responsible for the equally smart The Taste Of Others). A film about power - in particular, the way people choose to misuse it within relationships - family tensions, and the monstrous egos at large in the arts world, this is as French as Camembert and Sacha Distel, only considerably less cheesy.

Lolita (Marilou Berry) is a young student singer with self esteem issues: she obsesses about being overweight; questions whether she's good enough to make it professionally as a chanteuse; and endures a far from harmonious relationship with her father, Étienne (Jaoui's real-life husband, Jean-Pierre Bacri). He's a hugely successful novelist who's arrogant, conceited and boasts appalling manners (even by a Frenchman's standards). Worse, his 'I care' window is permanently closed with regards to his daughter.

"ONE OF THE MOST SOPHISTICATED MOVIES OF THE YEAR"

Things are further complicated by the fact that his waif-like partner, Karine (Virginie Desarnauts), is half his age and looks more like Lolita's glamorous sister (in fact, the film cleverly introduces the women to give this impression). Sylvia (Jaoui herself) and her self-loathing - well, he is a writer - husband Pierre (Laurent Grévill) get to know the family business when she starts tutoring Lolita's choral group, and his latest novel gets championed by Étienne.

Look At Me is one of those character-driven movies where the plot is largely incidental to the numerous emotional truths. Refreshingly, the characters aren't likeable a lot of the time; crucially, however, they are completely believable and recognisable. Accompanied by a heavenly soundtrack for lovers of choral music (yes, you sir), this is one of the most sophisticated movies of the year. Make sure you look at this.
